Marcus spent a tour in Germany, Korea, Hawaii, South America during the Iran Contra Affair, Viet nam. Marcus I believe did work for the CIA during his stay in the Army, the Viet Nam War caused our break up he volunteered for duty there. During the Iran Contra Affair Sgt Cherry was over the jungle, taking pictures of our Army building Airfields.

Marcus is a good father he loves his children and he is an honorable man. I will always hold a place in my heart for him. He was a good soldier, upholding the red, white, and blue. Never once did he shriek from dutykeeping in touch with his vow for honor. From Germany to Viet Nam wherever they commanded him to serve he did it and did it well.

REDS DeFECTING to ALLIED SIDE In GROWING NUMBERS

Saigon: South Vietnam said today 14,393 Comuunist Soldiers and "shadow government" personnel have defected to the allied side in the past three months because of the setbacks they had suffered." The main reason for their decision to rally to the just national cause was that they had found it impossible to endure the dangers and hardships of life in the Communist ranks and sustain their repeated military and political setback", it said. Among the defectors were 647 regular soldiers, 538 regional force troops, 9,046 guerillas and 3,802 ploitical cadre or part of the Viet cong "shadow government" in Viet Nam.   Government spokesperson issued the announcement as light fighting continued across South Vietnam, with no American losses reported in Combat that Frdiay and this morning 145 Communist Soldiers. Military spokeperson said US B52 stratofortresses flew six overnight raids, bombing from 29 miles east of Saigon to 246 miles northeast of the capital in strikes against suspected guerilla   buildups...Eight towns and allied camps under rocket or mortar attack late Friday and this morning, including the headquarters of a brigade of the US 25th Infantry Division 57 miles north of Saigon. No casualties were reported. Most of the fighting centered near Mo Duc Village, 310 miles northeast of Saigon in the northern war zone.Spokesman said South Vietnamese militiamen caught aplatoon of guerillas in an ambush there Friday night, killing 20 against four of their own wounded...Later government troops beat off a small ground attack and counted bodies of six North Vietnamese Soldiers afterwards, also near Mo Duc at Cut Bank. There were no South Vietnamese losses...Closer to Saigon, some US helicopter gunships provided searchlight illumination while others attacked a Communist Unit in the Michelin Rubber Plantation during the night, killing 13 soldiers, spokemen said.

I have a few old newspapers and thought I might share some articles...Flora

NAVY NIPS Khe Sanh Attack

Saigon (UPI) U.S.Navy pilots broke up another North Vietnamese probing attack against the outer defenses of Khe Sanh,a military spokesman disclosed today. Renewed fighting was reported at two areas along the DMZ but there were no details.   US Spokesperson reported 542 Americans were killed and 2,191 wounded in Vietnam last week, most of them in the fighting at Hue and near the DMZ. The figure was one short of the heaviest toll of the war when 542 were killed in the week of Feb. 11-17. A spokesman said the guerilla ground probe struck Wednesday three miles north of the main Khe Sanh Marine base in the northwestern corner of South Vietnam. Size of the attacking force was not disclosed and there was no report of casualties. The spokesman said the last week another 2,191 U.S. servicemen suffered wounds in action. Allied troops reported killing 3,849 Communists in the same week.  U.S. forces suffered a record 543 men killed in the week of Feb. 11-17. The spokesmen said that most of the 542 killed last week fell in the battles along the North-South Vietnam border and in the former imperial capital of Hue, 40 miles below the border.U.S.commanders reported Marines of the 3rd and 1st Divisions today battling North Vietnamese invaders near the leatherneck border bastion of Con Thien.  High ranking American military sources said the Communists apparently aim at pushing through the border defenses and once more driving against Hue, scene of a 25 day battle last month, that was the bloodiest battle of the war-More than 4,600 Communists were slain. Leathernecks supported by Army helicopter gunships and artillery killed 91 Communists Wednesday in a series of clashes below the northern border's DMZ. US Spokesperson said 15 Marines were killed.  The North Vietnamese have up to 50,000 troops poised in the border area for Hanoi's largest offensive of the war, according to the intelligence reports said. The big push could come at anytime. At Khe Sanh, the surrounded Marine fort anchors the western end of the allied anti-invasion line, Communist fire shot down a US Air Force C123 Wednesday, killing all 48 persons aboard, American spokesman said. Earlier the spokesmen said 49 men had been killed in the two engine transport's fireball crash.   US jet pilots Wednesday flew 83 missions against the North Vietnam. Navy A6 Intruder pilots bombed the Red River port inside Hanoi, 1.8 miles from the capital's center. The all weather jets also hit the Van Dien battery plant seven miles south of Hanoi.

Well, I have more hope you all find something in these. I love America and the thought of all of those young men dying always brings tears to my eyes. Flora

The second wreck occurred about 12:40 A.M. in the 2300 block of Turner Road. Robert Charles Koepen 21, of 2925 Sherwick, was killed when his car failed to make a turn and ran offt the road. The car struck a tree, flipped over and came to a rest on its top after striking a second tree. A passenger, Glenn Wayne Crump 21, of 37 De Boll, said Koeppen was showing him his new car when the accident occurred. Koeppen was traveling about 70 miles an hour when he lost control of his car, Crump said. Accident investigatot E.E Freytag said the speed limit is 30 miles per hour at the location of the accident. Crump was treated for minor injuries at Heights Hospital and released.

I included this because Bobby was really a nice guy and Marcus's best friend.

Spouse Notes:

I already had Christina Athans when I met Marcus Cherry Jr.She was probably 3 months old. I was living at a trailor on Crosstimbers Blvd. Since david and I were not getting along and I moved in with my friend named Kay. I got a job at a place called Prince's Drive In on Jensen Drive in North Houston. It was really a cool place you wore skates to take orders and deliver food, the uniform was shorts whie shirt and a little blue jacket. The place was hot there were always hot cars on the back lot and that's where I worked and I made good money.Mark had a burgandy ford mustang, with chrome rims and glass packs. The car was equipped with a three speed shifter and a holley four barrel. It was a 1965 1/2,a fast car. The guys, all the really cool guys, came on the weekends, with all the fast cars. We closed at midnight, until then everyone sat on the back row and watched all the cars show up to plan our strategy for the evening. We sold long necks cokes malts and food, and of course we all had a few beers, no one got drunk, I promise, just had a beer and waited for the cars to show up so we could plan our nightly races.Bobby Copeland had a ford fairlane jet black headers dumps holley four barrels, he had white pin stripes down the sides. He had a four speed hurst shifter, it was really fast and he raced it often, just like everybody. We went from Prince's on the Northside to the one downtown. None of the northsiders liked southsiders,so they competed back and forth taking each other's money. $100 bucks a quarter mile. We had to switch places all the time because of the cops so it was Holley Hall,Lake Houston,or the New Airport. These guys went to Smiley High or Sam Houston and everyone knew each other. Mark lived on Turner Drive then right off of Jensen. But we alternated race places to keep from getting busted.

You know something really bothers me about this campaign,it stinks. We as Americans should learn from War and the reasons for it. I want to bring upsome points here. First, is Vietnam. Eisenhower offers American Aid to support Ngo Dinh Diem on 10/23/1954. Of course the terminology was for "humanitarian aid". Nearly 58,000 Americans died in that Campaign.W hen the second World War ended they should have kept going. But they didn't.We have Communist China and Russia to worry about. I liked Ike so do not get upset. You know the French owned Vietnam for over a hundred years. I am sure they had quite a financial interest invested in that country. But they wanted their country back, and it was a War that was not intended to be won.M any important people in our Government and in businesses had vested interests in the manufacture of planes and arms,s o they had to recoup their investments. The philosophy "if we don't stop the Reds in South Viet Nam tomorrow they will be in Hawaii and next San Francisco". Australian, French, British and American troops, patriots the lot, died in that little country and the money lined someone's pockets. The point is  whoever decided to wage the War knew a whole lot more about interests than we did. I have six cousins and a husband there. My husband was never the same after that, and eventually we divorced,so that War cost me and my children a lot of pain, and strife. I recall going to the Rice Hotel, in fact I have a picture, and talking with George Sr, about his son's contribution, to the Vietnam Campaign, and was met with a surly look and a hateful remark. I told him I did not agree with their _____ policies and did not like Americans dying for nothing. Now during the Iran-Contra Affair:

Is it true that the Cherokee lived in log cabins ?  That the white man learned how to build log cabins from the Cherokee?   >> I can't say what buildings the Cherokees lived in, but the Swiss brought the basic design of their log houses with them and this is where the New Englanders, etal, learned how to build them. It was the easiest for settlers pushing away from "civilization" to build on their own or with a few good hands. One thing we learned in sociology is that ideas are not restricted to one group or another.  It's entirely possible that two or more cultures, thousands of miles apart, could independently look at a problem andconceive of the same solution.  Culture dispersion is one concept, but not the only. More than likely each culture used refinements of a basic concept in different ways.  The Swiss faced the horrendous Alpine winters and had to find a way to survive.  The winters were less severe in New England, but still bad enough. Adaptation to each had to be made. The Cherokees may have lived in less severe winters and adapted even more their own indendent method of building log cabins and as they moved further south, even more refined log cabins. Southern "shotgun" houses are an African concept, but again, I dare say any culture in the deep south or semi-tropical areas  would have some form of this shotgun house.  Captain John Smith reported on some near Jamestowne in the "long houses" of the natives.

So long ago

In every corner

A memory sits

And hangs around

The valiant soldiers

They came a'marchin

Bringing freedon home

She was hanging loose

Blowing in the wind

On the wings of doves

Came her dreams

Not knowing where to go

There are people here

and people there

In the night you can hear them cry

Oh where does freedom go?

In the tiny villages

The cities high and tall

In the small valleys

Close to the streams.

Oh America,so beautiful

Please let our freedom ring

Our forefather's sit on high

In majestic places

what do they think?

While our people

ponder and rage over

The condition of our country.

Our silent prayers,

They can not be said out loud

We place our hand over our hearts

And Pledge Allegiance to our country

From one end to the other

There is strife and unrest

Unsure of what tomorrow can bring

I say get down on our knees

And ask him please

For guidance and direction.

It is true

This land is your land

This land is my land

From sea to shining sea.

What went wrong?

Who is to blame?

Now what is the legacy

In the eyes of our mother

As she changes

With each season

The dissappointment is cast

For all of us.

The love of our fellow man.

Is sinking and slowly fading.

Into oblivion

We are all the same

Red is the color that flows in our vains.

Is it not the same within us all

We are born,and we die

It is what we venture forth as a quest

To search for that dream

Called American.

For each us us

Are different

But we all came from the same

Seed.

Taps

We have all heard the haunting melody of "Taps." It's the song that gives us that lump in our throats and usually tears in our eyes.  But do you know the story behind the song? If not, I think you will be pleased to find out about its humble beginnings.

Reportedly, it all began in 1862 during the Civil War, when Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe was with his men near Harrison's Landing, Virginia. The Confederate Army was on the other side of the narrow strip of land. During the night, Captain Ellisombe heard the moans of a soldier who was severely wounded on the field.  Not knowing if it was a Union or Confederate soldier, the Captain decided to risk his life and bring the stricken man back for medical attention.

Crawling on his stomach through the gunfire, the Captain reached the stricken soldier and began pulling him toward the encampment.  When the Captain finally reached his own lines, he discovered it was actually a Confederate soldier, but the soldier was dead.  The Captain lit a lantern and suddenly caught his breath and went numb with shock.  In the dim light he saw the face of the soldier.  It was his own son.

The boy had been studying music in the South when the war broke out. Without telling his father, the boy enlisted in the Confederate Army. The following morning, heartbroken, the father asked permission to give hisson a full military burial despite his enemy status. His request was only partially granted.  The Captain had asked if he could have a group of Army band members play a funeral dirge for his son at the funeral.  The request was denied since the soldier was a Confederate. But, out of respect for the father, they did say they could give him one musician.

The Captain chose a bugler.  He asked the bugler to play a series of musical notes he had found on a piece of paper in the pocket of the dead youth's uniform.  This wish was granted. The haunting melody, which we now know as "Taps" used at military funerals, was born.

Day is done Gone the sun
From the lakes From the hills
From the sky All is well, safely rest.
God is nigh.
Fading light Dims the sight
And a star Gems the sky, Gleaning bright From afar,
Drawing nigh, Falls the night.
Thanks and praise, For our days,
Neath the sun, Neath the stars, Neath the sky,
As we go, This we know, God is nigh.

I, too, have felt the chills while listening to "Taps" but I have never seen all the words to the song until now.  I didn't even know there was more than one verse. I also never knew the story behind the song and I didn't know if you had either so I thought I'd pass it along.  I now have an even deeper respect for the song than I did before.

Never heard of Cherokees being allied by blood to Powhatans in Virginia? We are part of the historic "Arkansas Cherokees; or the Cherokee Nation West" yet to be re-recognized by the federal government.

Happy New Year to all of you out there in Cyber Land. I have some information regarding the Smith Family that Fred Salter sent me but any new additional is always appreciated  I have this listed in my Newby File and would like additional info regarding the Newby Family. I have that they all were originally in Va. so I just want to know whether anyone has a connection for me past John. They must have been involved in some way during the RW and I would like to file for my DAR under my father's side of the family. I have: John Newby  Lunenburg Va,no wife listed as of yet  I do have 3 sons, John, Asa and Soloman, can someone shed some light on his origin. I do believe that it is Ralph but if some one else can tell me I appreciate it.

Soloman was in pittsylvania County Va and he married  Willey Wilkes. Their son was Abel Newby  Va, he married Elizabeth Hands. Now I have a story regarding Abel being killed by Pleasant Brady does anyone have any info regarding this story.I know it happened in Tennessee I believe. Now their son was Elisha Newby   he married  Tabitha Thurman her father is listed as Frederick Walter Thurman I want to trace this lineage back because I believe the Thurman family was also in the RW. Their son Riley Vincent Newby married Ruthey Eliz Thurman and I would like to find out more regarding her.She died under strange circumstances.Does anyone have the story behind her death. I have been lead to believe that she had an affair with Red Swafford and that is why she died, but their son is my grandfather John Riley Newby and he married Flora Mae Perry  so if any of you have info please share it with me.  Flora Newby in Spring Texas

Smudging  aka  smoke

To my understanding,a "smudging" to the Plains Indian Tribes is not the same thing it would be to a Tsalagi. We only burn cedar needles, not the wood as it is too sacred to burn to drive out  the AniSgina (evil spirits) or to help protect from the Dida:hnese:sgi (our term for witches). It is sometimes used in conjunction with the recitation of an i:gawe:sdi or sometimes simply by itself.

Sage is mostly used in other regions and in other people's ceremonies or ways. These days many of our tsalagi people have been influenced by other nations and have adapted to it and use it during prayers,etc..to my knowledge, this is more of a personal thing and not part of any traditional tsalagi ceremony.

The Peace Pipe

What I have learned of the pipe in our tradition is that it was one of the sacred items, it was made of whitestone, and had 7 stem holes. It was not used in Council Meeting. The Pipe was not passed, but the 7 Representatives of the Clans sat around it. The Pipe was stolen a long time ago.

Since then I have heard of different types of adaptions, but wouldn't call them tradition. I do know is that Fire is a sacred aspect.Tobacco, pleasing to the Spirits, and there is a way to remake their tobacco. But, these practices must be studied and learned and not taken to lightly. Traditionally, only certain people could make the fire, only certain people knew how to remake the tobacco. These were the traditions.I have heard that personal pipes were carried. From the old writings, even I would attempt to do them. I would suggest that you speak with an Elder, who knows of the Indian Ways.

Name Changes:

All the Indian Children that were sent to the "White Man's School's" were given "English-American Names" by the teachers by making a list of white mans names on the chalk board and having each child go up and point to a name (boys  boys name, girls   girls names). Upon 'pointing' out the name the teacher would then write the name on paper and pin it to their clothing, and from that day forward, they had to go by that name, extreme punishment was rendered if they spoke or used their Indian Names. The children were forbidden to use their native tongue. Some of these children were forced from their homes to live in the white man's world', all in the name of civilizing them.

Cherokee Legends:

The Red Bird is the Suns, daughter. The Suns daughter died, so the Sun refused to shine. Seven men were sent back to get the Suns daughter from the Ghost Land and told to put her in a box,but be sure not to open it for any reason.Well, they got her put her in the box,and were tricked into opening it. She had turned into a Red Bird and flew away. So this is why we cannot bring back anyone who has died. They must go to Ghost Land and cannot return to us.Because the Suns daughter wasn't brought back properly.

The Red Bird

As for the Red Bird I was told that when the Red Bird comes to you, you are to tell it your troubles and the

Red Bird will carry them away.. or ease your troubles..He in turn sings them away.

My friend Calvin Little Bear  Creek Indian Chief Sapulap Oka. shared this with me:

That the world was full of Indian People and all the Clans shared the same sky and the Mother Earth. It is

taboo for Indians to intermarry, and once a Cherokee is mated, that is their only mate for their life time. If they intermarry it is considered incest. There was plenty of wild game to hunt, the earth is full of many good things to eat, fruits and mushrooms, that came into with the seasons. The hide is used for clothing and for housing also. There is Peace throughout the Lands of Plenty because of this many tribes became abusive and glutiny fell throuhout the Lands. The Great Spirit, God, was very unhappy with his people and pleaded with them to quit what they were doing. To no avail,it didn't stop. A great fog fell upon the world and peoplewere very afraid, they could not find each other, only the people of their tribes.as the fog cleared away the people are scattered to the winds, and as the fog cleared and the people are with the animals, The Great Spirit called the People by the names of the animals, and they could not speak. So after that the Clans were identified with their soul mate the animal. Like the Bear Clan, Skink Clan, The Antelope Clan etc.

Jesus

Some of the Cherokee Clans tell a story,of a man who came over from accross the oceans and talked of many spiritual things. He lived among the Cherokee People for awhile. One day he told the People that he had to go back to the land from whince he came. He told a tale that his own people would kill him by way of crucixition but not to be upset. This was something that had to be. The man told the Tsalagi People that one day their cousins would come from accross the land from where he was going and that they should take thses people in,welcome them, and take care of them.

The Cherokee have a story of a flooding, and "prophets",and they call their Deity the "Great Spirit", but those things didn't define them as "Christians". They had no concept or idea of Christ's teachings until the European settlers arrived. So, while they were essentially a moral and spiritual people, Christ like in theirways, they don't fit the essential criteria to being a "Chrisitan".

The Cherokee had a matrilineal societ,a social system in which their descent was traced strictly through their mothers side of the family. In the Cherokees matrilineal kinship system a person received this clan for life, and his only knismen were those who could be trced through her, that is her mothers mother, mother's sister and, most important, and powerful man in the child's life, the mother's brother. This socail structure baffled white people.

The Clan provided many important functions including child care for orphans and the destitute, hospitality for visiting clan members from other towns and most important, the avenging of wrongs committed against Clan members.

Clan membership was essential to one's existance as a human being within a Cherokee Society because of the protection of the kinship system. Since Clan's were divided into white or peace Clans or red  or war Clans,a Cherokee Clan determined a persons official political assignment and his role in society. Kinship through the Laws of the Clan, governed social relationships, dictated possible marriage partners, designated friends, designated enemies and regulated behavior through a system such as which kinsmen had to be respected and with which kinsmen one could be intimate.

If a member of a Clan needed help in any manner, his Clan would take care of him,and if a Clan member was injured or killed by a member of another Clan, his Clan was responsible for revenge. No such thing as a fued would evolve, because it was understood among all Clans that revenge would be taken in the event of an injury or death, and the recipient Clan of the revenge usually considered it justified. The type of revenge could be determined by the Clansmen who were selected to carry it out. There were often times when the Clan of the offender would perform the revenge on a selected member of their Clan to eliminate the possibility of an innocent sufferer.

When a Clan membr was visiting other nearby or distant towns, he was still considered family, and the Law of Blood revenge held true in any location. The Clans were considered close family, and they were the ideal unit for revenge since they considered themselves related as brothers and sisters.
