From
the travelers aid record the family first applied 2-10-1939. Their past addresses
Rockwood, Tennessee and Rossville, Georgia. Clyde and Estelle, along with their two
children, Helen or Ellen and Eveline had come from Rockwood to Rossville, Georgia looking
for work, on a farm. Alas when they arrived the job wasn't there, and they had come, but
now tragically, they had no work.
It
gets awful cold in Georgia, and in Tennessee. It was the times, there is no money, and
people are sleeping in boxcars and under bridges. Sounds familiar. A tragic story, and a
common one in those days gone by. The father being described as ignorant and filthy, well
I don't know about that. I do know that there is a big difference in ignorance and just
not being taught something, and filthy, well again, it seems so chillingly brutal.
They
had no money for their trip to get back to Rockwood. So, instead of returning I guess they
did what they could. They established themselves in a "paper house" on the city
dump, at the end of Main Street. They lived there in their paper house for one year. In
the meantime their mother Estelle had given birth to another child, Bessie, at the
Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga.
The
Travelers Aid worker made a home visit to the city dump. The mother and baby were
occupying the only bed they had. The mother had tuberculosis by this time but refused to
enter the Pine Breeze Sanitarium. The father had a pushcart and was selling paper to
"O.B. Andrews Box Company."
By
this time the family had established residency they were referred upon second application
to TA 2-15-1940 to the City Bureau of Relief. The City Bureau of Relief record showed that
the first application was made 2-22-1940. The father, dirty and unkempt, had called at the
office. His wife had entered the Pine Breeze (after the Health Department had sworn out a
warrant for her) and the 3 children were with his sister, Mrs. Ed Miles at 836 1/2 Main
St., Chattanooga, or at 817 Fulton St. The father was still junking, I guess that is all
he could do.
All
of God's creature's have the ability to adapt. It
is the human animals though that have the hardest time doing that. When I read this entry
it touched my heart, I could feel the pain, involved in their lives. Arrangements were
made for the children and their father to board in the Alvin Vaughn Home at 210 Ruth St.
In June of 1940 the father was jailed and bound over to the Grand Jury for neglect of the
children.
In
September of 1940 the mother was released from Pine Breeze. In 1942 Estelle again was in
the sanitarium, she gave up her daughter, Evelyn, because Clyde had left her. Helen
Morris, another child was adopted at about 8 years of age to a Schnider family, and again
later to a Morrison Family. Her name was changed to
Donna
