1. John Franklin COLQUITT - 985

————————————————————————————————————————

Birth Place: 10/16/1888

Death Date: 22 July 1980

Burial Place: Bon Wier Texas

Notes:

Formerly of Brasher's Chapel,John Colquitt died Sunday at the age of 90 years.he lived at Bon Weir, Texas since around 1912.he grew up at Brashers Chapel on Sand Mountain, a son of Robert and Margaret Pugh Colquitt. This man was a farmer and a good one. I was told he had been bitten by rattlers so many times he was immune. He was a share cropper with Jim Ritter, Tex Ritter's daddy's farm and that's how he and granny Ritter made their living. He loved being outdoors and had a green thumb...He put a layer of dirt mixed with clay, a layer of straw, a layer of potatoes on and on the pen it was square like a pig pen and the potatoes would grow out of the cracks all year long. He grew turnips, collards, Irish and sweet potatoes vegies all year round. He called Ella his wife the "straw-boss".

John Colquitt was a very humorous man witty, spontaneous with his humor. He liked the outdoors, and always farmed, every time we went to visit he always had fresh vegies. He was really funny, especially about the indoor plumbing,he described it as not natural and always insisted on using the outhouse. He used to go down to the river and get fresh sugar cane for my kids when they were little, said There was a wild cane for fishing and he used to go the cane for fishing poles and dry them out and next year had fishing poles. He liked to dance and liked the good old country music old Hank Williams, Tex and such. I asked him a long time ago and he told me he used to truck farm, they had to, farming was the only way he could buys shoes, clothes for his youngins',and flour, sugar, good ole chickory coffee, yuk. What ever staple goods he needed. Outside there was a root cellar, but watch out for them rattler's. They liked to get in there to stay cool and to stay warm. He was bit twice but just doctored hisself, and now he was immune.

Every once in awhile he'd make his way back to the bootlegger for a short snort, of course that was for medicinal purposes only, because of his age. Everyone used to tell me and Mark, especially mom and Aunt Lottie, now don't you take him for any of that whiskey, but he told me he was old enough to do what he wanted, he had done his job, well I mean he was a very sweet old gentleman, and that southern hospitality just oozed off of him, no wonder Ella Ritter fell in love with him, but they were good to each other. People could learn a lesson or two from watching real people in love, it was a storybook. He was lost when Granny Ella died. Mom "Anna Lee" told me he used to sing them songs as children and they were funny he played the banjo. That he and his brother Jasper had swum the Mississippi River in the summertime to come to Texas ,Jasper disappeared and they found no trace that always upset grand daddy,to no avail they ran advertisements in the newspaper but always wondered John says he probably joined the Army during World War I.

In Koonce, Texas, John, along with Will and Simp White built a Syrup Mill, John made most of the syrup in Panola County,Murvaul Texas, or showed people how to make it .It was called Blue Ribbon Cane Syrup. They used mules to turn the syrup mill to grind the juice out of the cane stalk and then they cooked it until it foamed they then took the foam off and skimmed it and you have syrup He made it by the hundred gallons. Grand daddy grew cotton, cane, tomatoes, okra, peppers, potatoes, squash, watermelon and winter vegies. What ever would grow he grew whatever grew he planted all year round.

Per Mrs. Anna Lee Colquitt Ritter:

Me, Anna Lee, and my mother, Ella Ritter, and brother's and sister Dorothy, Darrell, Chester they were chopping cotton for Mr.Pate. his huge lighted round object,  lit up and had four legs. It was bright and round and a big flash of light and it landed. There were three or four little men, who got out when it landed, and we could hear them talking or voices we couldn't understand them. It landed where the cattle used to run where the cattle used to run to the Murvaul Bottoms, and this lane was for the cattle to get back and forth and to get to water. The family was around a hundred yards from it.

The craft landed and Granny Ritter and children ran to the house. They were around a half a mile from the house they went North and the craft went South. They didn't stop till they got home and. They never went back to that field to chop cotton......

One day Granddaddy told Granny I want you to stop reading the Houston Chronicle because it brought bad luck.
