In the year 1940, the Senior Class of 1952 started out in the first grade 44 strong and I do mean strong, for Mrs. Helen Underwood was given the impossible task of getting us to like school.
You'll know what I mean by impossible when I name a few of the little children with which she had to care.

I believe that is about 24 who started and are to finish at CHS.
During our first year we took part in the annual May Fete sponsored by the school.
In the second grade we grew a little stronger with Jane Swanzy and Jimmie Sue Miller making a grand entrance into our class. During this year, we presented a play called "Ole King Cole" in PTA. Also we took that never to be forgotten train trip to a city to which very few of us will ever get to go again - - Gary.
Anyway, after Miss Eunice Lockey taught us how to do "Put Your Little Foot" she passed us into the 3rd grade.
All those 49 strong, energetic students must have grown a little weary for when enrollment day rolled around only 27 students were present. However, those 27 must have really been something because it took 2 teachers to handle us. Miss Emma Jane Atkinson and Mrs. Bill Screws.
Ann Bellamy, Jean LaGrone, Betty Holland, and Maxine Sanders entered in the 3rd grade. That's probably the reason for the extra teacher.
I don't know where they came from but Orville Scott, James Wedgeworth, Robert Adams, Geraldine Lawrence, Bobbie Ann Peace,Kathryn Lawhorn, Agnes Belew, Cathryn Stallings, Ramona Chadwick, Geraldine Cariker, and Tommye Jean Jones joined our happy group with Miss Charlie Fay Allison and Mrs. Thelma Brooks as the lucky teachers.
The 5th grade sponsors were Mrs. Mary Eva White and Mrs.Edna Martin with Frances Kirkland, Eugene Whitaker, Norvil Williams and Paul Ingram as new students.
In the 6th grade we were really rough and tough. It took 4 teachers to handle us. They were Miss Fay Cassity, later replaced by Mrs. Clancy, Miss Majorie Ball, and Mrs. Mable Pace.
We admit that we were pretty mean but when Nelda Fay Sparks, Sue Butler, Jewel Dale James, Bobbie Kyle, Mattie Kyle, Jesse Lovell, Jean Payne, Thomas Pierce, Raymond Smith, and Glenn Nutt were here matters really got bad.
For our 7th year in school, we were moved to the temporary buildings where this school now stands. Mr. John T. Latham, Mrs. Pearl Jones, and Mrs. Tarver were our teachers and Mr. Grady LaGrone was our principal. Lorene Coleman, Douglas Crawford, Bobby Gray, Charles Kyle, and Russell Soape were the only new students who remained in Carthage permanently.
In the 8th grade we again changed building along with principals. Mrs. Voorhies and Mrs. Alma Kyle were our home room teachers and Mr. Louis Robinson our new principal.
Margie Ebarb, Wetzel LaGrone, Chester Haynes, Tomye Bankhead, and Wayland Mims helped boast our total number of students to 102.
The 9th grade gave us again Mr. Robinson as our principal. Our sponsors were Mrs. Nancy Boze, Mrs. Ora Barton, and Mr. Vernon Wooley. Our class by this time reached its peak with 128 enrolled. However, only 4 students, Eva Pearl Peterson, Don Arnold, Pat Stephens, and Billy Morris entered our class to remain.
In the 9th grade we presented a talent scout show in assembly with Boze, Wooley, Barton, Bouncing Beautiful, Bountiful, Bouble Bath, as out sponsor.
The class officers were: President, Buck Crawford; Vice-president, Raymond Smith; Secretary, Jane Pitts; Treasurer, Bil Sullivan.
Ann Vandigriff was elected most beautiful girl and Raymond Smith as the most handsome boy. Mary Lou Walker and Jimmy coats were the most popular boy and girl.
In the fall of that year the school sponsored a carnival in which each grade participated. The Freshman sponsored a Fun House.
then came our class party on April 1. It was informal and everyone was required to wear one item backwards.
Our 1948-49 Junior High Football team was privileged to be the first to use our new Martin Stadium.
Finally came our Freshman graduation. Maxine Sanders was top honor student with an average of 97.7 and Michael Ross was second with an average of 97.4.
In the 10th grade the year 1949-50, 117 students entered the rooms of Mrs. Maurine Biggerstaff and Miss Helen Rider. Mr. Frank Dillard was our principal. Jack Forsythe, Carl Campbell, Coleen Grissom, Byron Hill, and Onie Holt were only a few who were to soon get acquainted with Mr. Dillard.
Sophomore Class officers were: President, Byron Hill; Vice-president, Coleen Grissom; Secretary, Vida Lee White; Treasurer, Cathryn Stallings, Class favorites were Jo Ann Jarvis and Wetzel LaGrone.
In the year 1950-51 the new students Alfred brown, Clive Fields, Delbert Langston, Billie Ann Nowlin, Dana Ransom, Peggy Powell, Harold Martin, and Paul Robinson entered CHS with the new principal, Mr.Martin Walling. Mrs.Biggerstaff, Miss Helen Rider and Mrs. Sarah Ross were our Junior sponsors. We had 101 enrolled. The Junior Class officers were: President, Michael Ross; Vice-president, Charles Ray Nutt; Secretary, Pat Stephens; Treasurer, Jerry Lawrence Sepaugh. Class favorites were Pat Stephens and Allen Moore Boren.
We sponsored the annual Junior-Senior Banquet in honor of the Seniors of '51 and "Bon Voyage" as the theme.
The month of September 1951 was a joyous month for 84 seniors. Mrs. Leila Belle LaGrone and Miss Bess Lacy became our sponsors. Mr. Robinson became principal of the senior high school. Jesse Harris and Don Johnson were the only 2 new students.
Senior Class officers are: President, Dana Ransom, vice-president, Hugh Johnson; Secretary, Jean Payne; Treasurer, Maxine Sanders. Class favorites are Charlcie Taylor and Woody Pierce.
It's hard to believe, but some of our would-be Senior boys and girls found themselves in love, so they married.
The Senior Class of '52 had through the years lost 33 girls due to marriage. Two others are married and are still attending school.
The love bug also bit 3 of our would-be Senior boys. Of the 38 Seniors who married, 11 now have children of their own.
During our entire 12 years of school, we have been fortunate enough to have lost only 3 fellow classmates by death. Those deaths occurred during the early grades.
I have been a good while bringing you up-to-date on the most wonderful Senior class ever to enter and leave the halls of CHS, the Class of 1951-52, but I believe the class itself would like to leave a message to you.
Sophomore Girls Celebrate Leap Year!
Leap Year is really here! This was proved at the Sophomore class party Tuesday night, May 13, when the girls did the inviting for the party. The girls had to wait on the boys during the evening bringing them refreshments and asking for dances.
The party was informal and light refreshments were served. Games, dancing and an entertaining program were enjoyed by the class members.
Committees who planned the party consisted of:
Buddy Colmer - - music
Marybell Brown and O.H. Brooks - - decorations
Lane Dixon - - drinks
Sandra Hudson - - program
Jacke Davis, Tommy Bingham, and Benny Lawrence - - games.
