Home Town Pony Makes GoodPanaljo, the well-known mascot of the Pony football team, was purchases from Mr. John Neal of the Carthage firm, Ross & Neal. About twenty stores and business men in and around Carthage contributed to a common fund in order to buy this pony. He is a Shetland pony about two and one half years old. His name was the brain-child of cute Dixie Arnold, popular head cheerleader of Panola Junior College. It was voted upon and accepted by the student body by a large majority vote. As might be expected, Panaljo has received quite a bit of attention at the college. Before our games with the North Texas State Eaglets, all students and the members of the faculty were required to pay their respects to the pony by bowing or curtsying. Then, in turn, Panaljo bowed to the football players. This provided plenty of fun for all who participated. It was only twenty-five minutes until our game with Magnolia A&M., and cheerleader Felton Blair could not find the ponys blanket and rein. He made a frantic dash for the stadium to see what could be done, and there he learned that cheerleader Cicero Dobson had placed them in the janitors storeroom in order that they might be easily accessible! There followed a mad race back to the college and then back to the stadium in time to catch all but the first few plays of the game. Poor Felton! So far, we have made ten more points than our opponents which seems to indicate that Panaljo is bringing us good luck. All Hail Panaljo, King of Panola Junior College Sports! |
The freshman and sophomore classes met Thursday morning, October 14, after the pep rally, and elected the new respective classes to the Panola Junior College Student Council. These students are to serve for the rest of the fall term and the next spring term.
From the sophomore class were elected the following students: Felton Blair, Billy Fite Edwards, and Beverly Van Sandt, all of Carthage. It was re-election for Edwards; the other two are serving for the first time.
From the freshman class the students elected were: W.G. Blair and Jack Finley, both of Carthage. The retiring freshman representatives were Jane Metcalf and Hubert Parkman.
The class representatives are officers, elected by the student body. They merely represent their classes in the Student Council. Lets all think seriously about the new president and other newly elected officers, because they can be of great benefit to the school and the student body.
The American Legion Post sent an invitation to President Musgraves on Friday, October 15, inviting the faculty and students to a reception after the Magnolia A&M. Panola game on Saturday night.
It was really a swell dance and was appreciated by the students. I think everyone will agree that there never has been a slicker floor. Everyone was having trouble standing up, but we had a good time trying. And we do have to admit that the floor was a wee bit better than the one we are used to out at the college.
Seen at the dance were Jackie Reeves and Patsy Adams, W.G. Blair and June Reagan, Bob and Ann Williams, Jack Dancer and Betty Stilwell, Louie Mogabgab and Betty McGuirt, Bill Amberg and Wanda Proctor, Glenn Taylor and Dixie Arnold, and those good looking White Oak boys-Dowell, Rogers, and Arney-with their darling girls-Peg, Beverly, and Nell.
Thanks a lot, Legionnaires. It was a fitting climax to that game we won.
School Spirit? Yes, definitely! From the first football game Panola Junior College played through the present time, our school spirit and attitude have been severely criticized. I think we can all agree to the fact that this spirit has been lagging. Possibly the reason could be that we have been defeated three times. Certainly our losing should strengthen our morale---in one way---and make us realize the necessity of backing our football boys whole-heartedly. Yes, we say we are backing our boys, but are we pushing forth a little extra effort to show our gratitude? We need to see more people sitting and yelling in the pep squad so that our voices will ring forth loud enough to make them hear us. When our college name is mentioned, we should all let people know that we attend college here and that we are proud we do.
Some criticized the respects that were paid Panaljo on Friday before we played the Eaglets, but this was done all through fun. I imagine that all students were asked by someone what those ribbons meant. When they answered, everybody thought the idea was quite clever. More things like this particular incident make a school seem more like a school. We like to think that everyone is living for the happiness of another person.
It is quite true that we dont have a band for the college, but who knows that we wont have one in the near future? After all, we are new and have not had time to get well established and have all the things we want or plan to have some day. Perhaps when our school grows and more people become interested in a band, we shall have one. At the present time we have a good pep squad, but it can be made much better if everyone co-operates. We want to continue to be good, and when a band is organized, we will be so good that we can have a band and a pep squad. It is true that a band can make more noise, but it takes more effort, work, and strength to be a pep squad member than it does to be a band member. Football boys may not want to admit that a pep squad and band help their moral, but between you and me some older football stars have let it slip that a band and pep squad certainly remind them that someone is backing them and we are all out to win.
If our spirits are down-hearted and low, it makes the teams spirit low, too. Lets all work together and let our boys know that to us they arent just another football team but that we are proud to say that they are OUR football team and that we think they are tops.
Although the freshman class is putting on the dance we want to invite all the sophomores and their dates, also the faculty.
Everyone is looking forward to the organization of a glee club for the college. If enough become interested, one will soon be under way. Mrs. Stephens from the Christian Church will be the director. If interested in becoming a member, please give your name either to Adella Groom or to Dean Boze.
Mrs. Musgraves and Mrs. Ashby need a book on the new bridge rules so that they can settle their arguments. They need to settle their arguments so that they might stay on the right highway between Texarkana and Carthage. They need to stay on the right highway so they won't run out of gas. They need to have plenty of gas ..
Roy Anderson surely is fickle-minded. He can't make up his mind where to go for his fun, Carthage or Henderson. Plain desperation, probably . Miss Coldwell thinks all females in our school including herself, should like to know .I am looking forward to the day that Mrs. Conlee hits Jimmie Jones by surprise. Why don't you try chalk throwing, Mrs. Conlee? If a certain Glyn Johnston would leave himself off guard for a split second, maybe Rosemary Bounds could catch him. Strenuous little moppet, isn't she? . Buddy Smith and Jake Johnson have been going in just about every direction, but I think they have centered their attack on the metropolis of Beckville. I know where that is ..I hear that Carson Joines is having a rough time on the weekends, Dixie. Something could be done about that by a really determined police force .Wendell "Lummox" Swan has surely been catching the eye of a certain Brooksie Miller lately. Conservative in their ways, these football players I have heard that G. Blair is hen-pecked by a certain drum majorette. I believe that her name is June Something -or -Other. Blair will not be deceived by this purely feminine trick . The "Night Hawk" (Billy Hugo) is still operating out of Carthage. It is always nice to see these old haws turn up ..If certain Buddy Terry would tell Christine Bailey that she couldn't go out with other boys, I think she would be a lot happier. Well, we would think so ..Have you heard Robbie Thompson play "Star Dust"? Next question .Louis Mogabgab came in Sunday morning at 2 a.m. with lipstick smeared across that pan of his. That's were he may get fooled ..Jack Dancer and Mary Jeter have a case. You can't civilize dopes like that .. Robbie Thompson and Billy Freeman are seeing one another. The pace that kills ..We have one more room in the Athletic Dorms for the "Free" boys. It is room No. 1, and it is occupied by Mart Crawford, James Gray, and O'Neal Ingram. Medical science has made a great progress lately, but some things remain incurable.
..We have three boys who occupy room No. 9. They make only short and unhappy appearances on their trips to and from the shower. So let's take a pity on Chapple Dowell, Charles Arney, and Bobby Rodgers. Ah, quaint old White Oak . Bill Wall has been seen parked outside of the Methodist Church every Sunday night. This could be a faster schedule and certainly a gaudier scene . Teddy Miller has been looking around the campus, but I don't think he has made up his mind yet. We're not going to rush into things; we'll tell you that.... Red Williams is more or less in the same boat. But you've got to be fast .. I take upon myself to apologize for the bashfulness of the boys in Room 3, namely Nissen, Martin, and Suitar. That's not bashfulness; it's hysteria From now on, whenever anyone wants to find to find out anything about Bill Amburg's personal doings, just ask Wanda Jo Proctor. What about smoke signals? .It's a split decision as to which history class is the roughest, Mr. Sharp's or Mr. Defee's. And if anybody starts looking for daylight, hit him.
Student Council Sponsors School Song Contest
" And now we shall sing the School Song, written by (your name?), a member of Panola Junior College in 1948."
You may win this honor- plus five dollars in cash. If you can secure the help of Irving Berlin in writing what you think is a good school song, that is your good fortune; but it must be original, turned in by Friday, November 12, 1948, and must be written by a student of the Junior College. The student council will accept of reject the song. No entry submitted after the above date mentioned will be considered.
In his speech of Thursday, October 14, Coach Knowles mentioned that it takes "something extra" to win a football game. School Spirit might be that "something extra." A school song will increase our school spirit and perhaps add that 'something extra."
We believe there is talent here which can produce a truly great school song. This is your chance to be remembered for many years to come- and also provides a good execute for not getting your English lesson once or twice. After all should a great writer be required to bring in homework when he (or she) is concentrating on a masterpiece!
Remember, anyone may write the song; the prize will be given to the Junior College student submitting the winner.
Thanks have been generally expressed by students attending Panola Junior College to those who made arrangements for a bus to go to Corpus Christi. Some who really wanted to go weren't able to make because of various reasons, but we all appreciate the efforts put forth to obtain this bus. Those students and fans who were interested in going turned in their names to Mr. Ray and Rand Drug, and he had the rest of the responsibility.
On the evening of October 11, Messrs, Boze, Nichols, Musgraves, and Knowles journeyed to Henderson to meet for East Texas Teachers. The organization was meeting for the first time. After several speeches were given and various business matters attended to, refreshments were served to those present. Someone must have reported the fact that Coach Knowles was doing too much night plotting and was losing weight, because a report came through that he was served four desserts. Maybe we should all work to be football coaches.
