Lawrence R. Sharp in World War I uniform

Lawrence R. Sharp was born to Alonzo Thomas Sharp and Fannie Belle Metcalf Sharp on October 22, 1889 in Beckville, Texas.

Mr. Sharp attended the rural school in Beckville (1897-1907); Jacksonville College in Jacksonville, Texas (1908-09); West Texas State Normal College in Canyon, Texas ((1910-11); University of Texas, summer sessions (1913-14) and regular session (1916-17). He also attended the American Expeditionary Forces University in Beanne, France (March, April, May 1919); the University of Texas, summer session (1936), regular sessions, (1937-40), and summer session (1940). Mr. Sharp obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas in 1940.

Teaching experience: Principal Yarnell Common School, a one-teacher school, Deadwood, Panola County, Texas; Principal Chico High School, Chico, Texas; Principal, Woods High School, Tenaha, Texas, Principal, Shady Grove High School, Tacoma, Texas; Principal, Fairplay High School, Beckville, Texas; Superintendent of Schools, Tatum, Texas; County Superintendent of Schools, Panola County, Carthage, Texas; Superintendent of Beckville Consolidated School, Beckville, Texas.

Other work: Private First Class, United States Army, American Expeditionary Forces. June 25, 1917, to July 12, 1919.

Mr. Sharp ended his career in education by serving on the first faculty of the then Panola Junior College.  He retired from Panola Junior College in May 1959.

His Master's Thesis was History of Panola County Texas to 1860, a copy of which is in the Baker Library at Panola College.
