In it's heydey, the town of Gary bustled with business activity including a cotton gin, sawmill, a hotel, and even a saloon. Gary residents are rightfully proud of their famous sons, including singer and actor Woodward Maurice (Tex) Ritter, historian Walter Prescott Webb, and agricultural and civic pioneer Dr. Zack L. Daniel. Almost 300 students in grades K-12 attend classes in the Class 1-A Gary Independent School District. In the early 1970s, Lincoln King, a Gary history teacher, created The Loblolly publication to document and preserve the people and history of Panola County. For three decades, Gary High School students have published The Loblolly, which has won state and national awards. Gary is also home to the renowned George W. Pirtle Boy Scout Reservation on the shores of Lake Murvaul, and to the Daniel Springs Baptist Camp. Both of these facilities draw thousands of young people to Panola County each year.
