The Sammy Brown Library
is one of 4,000 libraries across the country selected by the
National Endowment for
the
Humanities (NEH) and the
American Library Association
(ALA) to receive free
hardcover editions of 17 classic books as part of the We
the People Bookshelf grant program. The theme of the
Bookshelf is “A More Perfect Union.”
To encourage young people to take advantage of this great
collection of patriotic books and movies the Sammy Brown
library will be holding a contest during the months of
August and September. Any student K – 12 who reads all of
the books in their particular age group will receive a
certificate, a miniature American Flag, have their picture
displayed in the library and will win a patriotic T shirt or
a book bag.
The youngest readers in grades K to 3 only have to read, or
have their parents read, 3 books to them in order to be
eligible for the prizes. Older students must read the books
themselves. Students in grades 4 to 6 must also read 3
books, grades 7 & 8 have 4 books to read and grades 9 to 12
will be required to read 6 books.
Civil War buffs are also encouraged to drop by and check out
these new additions to the library catalog. The bookshelf
contains 5 new Civil War movies by Ken Burns. The movies
which were made for the Public Broadcasting Station (PBS)
are broken down by years. The first movie features events
in 1861, and each movie beyond that covers another year of
the civil war up to 1865. The films have been hailed as
masterpieces and contain landmark historical storytelling.
This is a great opportunity to introduce your children to
books about American history, they can have fun learning
about their country and win prizes and special recognition
while doing it. Anyone having questions is urged to call
the library at 903-693-6741.
